IRS Form 1040 Walkthrough
Understanding the architecture of the standard US tax return.
The Form 1040 is the cornerstone of US individual tax filing. Every major piece of software eventually boils your financial life down into the boxes on this two-page PDF.
The Architecture
The form is split into distinct sections:
- Filing Status & Personal Info: Determines your standard deduction.
- Income (Lines 1-9): Your W-2 wages, investment income, and business income (passed through from Schedule C).
- Adjusted Gross Income (Line 11): Your gross income minus specific deductions (like student loan interest). This number dictates your eligibility for many tax credits.
- Tax & Credits (Lines 16-24): Where your actual tax burden is calculated.
- Payments (Lines 25-33): What you already paid via withholding or estimated payments.
- Refund or Amount You Owe: The final tally.
